Message will be to cram larger amounts of compressed air into, this will make it act like a larger engine, the trade off is: when your turbos aren't spooled/making boost the engine wont be as responsive and will make less low rpm power. A lower compression ratio motor will be less fun to drive daily on the street but will be able to run higer boost and make more top end powa. Higher cylinder pressure makes more power, that is why you hear many NA v8 guys install higher compression pistons when they build their motors.

Piston compression is far less efficient compared to Turbo compression as there is more power required to push the piston up in a cylinder instead of spinning a turbine. However a piston is very exact in the way that it will move a fixed amount of air regardless of how fast it's moving (there are caveats which is where cam lift, duration, overlap, ring seal etc. come into play) a turbo has an efficiency range/map, if you where to spin a turbo one rotation by hand you will not move almost any air, but if you where to spin it several rotations very fast it will begin to move air and depending on how fast you can spin it, it will move more air with higher VOLUMETRIC EFFICIENCY than you can achieve with a piston.

The reason why we don't just run a jet engine (which is very similar to a turbo) in our cars is: it needs time to spool up (and it's also very expensive to make + very dangerous for the cars behind us in traffic) vs a piston engine which makes power on demand at the cost of efficiency and with the right combination you can have the best of both worlds.

This is all my theory on how it works, there are several articles that will go into further detail, Google is your friend!! but I hope I explained all this correctly and that this helps you. :)

*disclaimer*: all that I say may be true or I may be completely wrong and I accept that.... please, it is your duty as another person on the internet to in-politely tell me how wrong I am :)
